Sea buckthorn


The sea buckthorn (bush), Hippophae rhamnoides R., exist mainly in different subspecies in Asia and Europe. The plant grows in moderate to cold climate. Supported by its modesty, the special formation of its roots and nitrogen-fixing to the soil it is extensively cultivated increasingly worldwide to protect against water and wind erosion, for recultivation of grounds (being a pioneer plant) and to protect groundwater.

The sea buckthorn berries belong to the most vitamin-packed fruits of our flora. They have in addition many valuable substances for nutrition purposes. These have among others also antioxidative activities.

The oils from the seeds and from the flesh of the berries, which is different, contains fatty acids in considerable concentrations, among others the important omega 3 grease acids.

Sea buckthorn plays an important role in the people medicine of Asian peoples already for over one thousand years. Scientific work for the pharmacological use of the sea buckthorn, specially of the oil, was started in the former USSR about 1930. The extraction and the medical application of secondary substances from sea buckthorn, also from leaves and wood, is part of more scientifically work in the PR China and in India.
